The Crist Family

The Vineyard
Located at the Crist Estate in Carmel Valley, I planted the vineyard in 1997.  The vineyard is located on a south facing slope behind our home and consists of approximately 1,100 vines.  The combination of the micro climate and the rocky hillside was ideal for my passion for Bordeaux style wines.  We planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot grapes on engineered  root stock four feet on center with five foot rows running across the hillside for maximum sun exposure.  Each year I bring in a crew to help prune, leaf pull and shoot prune.  I like to keep the production low with two shoots per spur and no more than two clusters per shoot.  This promotes intense flavors and even ripening of the fruit.

The Winemaker
Scott Crist has been making wine since 1998 as a home winemaker.  Frank Joyce, his neighbor and producer of Château Christina wines, has been Scott's inspiration and mentor throughout his apprenticeship.  Frank's help, a few books on winemaking, a love for red wines and the encouragement of friends and cohorts have inspired the first release of Spencer’s Cabernet Sauvignon.

We moved from the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area to this peaceful valley in 1992.  My wife, Lisa and the kids all get involved with harvest and bottling.  Chelsea especially loves to help me with fermentation and maturation.  Spencer, AKA the quirky corker, helps me shoot prune and drop fruit at the end of verassion.  We just love to grow things.  My wife Lisa has an extensive vegetable garden where she grows heirloom tomatoes and a variety of vegetables and herbs.  My oldest daughter Lauren loves to cook and help with harvest.  It’s a family affair.
